The Sustainable Oxymoron of Qualitative GIS This paper discusses the idea of a qualitative GIS, by presenting an experiment held in Palermo during the last few years. It first presents a theoretical framework on the shifting paradigms concerning maps and GIS, and then introduces the current debate on mixing qualitative and quantitative data and techniques of analysis in GIScience. By collecting mental maps representing the neighbourhoods of Palermo and inserting them within a traditional GIS structure, the author has warped these traditional representations in order to obtain a map which is less technically accurate, yet more complying with the perception of the citizens. Sammendrag Denne artikkelen belyser feltsamtaler som forskningsverktøy. Feltsamtaler er ofte usynlige og underkommunisert i den vitenskapelige litteraturen. Samtalene lar seg vanskelig tallfeste og beskrive; de mangler tilsynelatende systematikk og framstår gjerne bare som hverdagslig prat. Med søkelys på konteksten for samtalen og samtalens rammer og regi setter artikkelen feltsamtalen inn et kvalitativt metodeunivers. Roll-with-Participation. Il caso di ProMondello a Palermo

This contribution is based on an ongoing experience in Palermo: a participatory process (ProMondello) aimed at producing a master plan. The specificity of ProMondello stems from the fact that the promoters of the process are neither social communities nor local administrations, which so far have only arranged highly questionable and easily exploitable processes. ProMondello is organised by a private stakeholder, the Italo-Belgian Real Estate Company, which has been managing a beach concession for about a century.
